Les Misérables film star Samantha Barks could be singing “Oom-Pah-Pah” on Broadway in a new production of Oliver!, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail. Producer Cameron Mackintosh is reportedly eyeing Barks to reprise the role of Nancy, which she is currently playing in the U.K. tour of Oliver! No additional casting, theater or dates have been set.
The producer is also eyeing Barks for a possible movie adaptation of the 1960 Lionel Bart musical. The new film, which is aiming for a 2016 release, would reportedly be a re-imagined, updated version of the classic musical. Although no director is currently attached, Daily Mail reports Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) is Mackintosh’s top choice. The original 1968 film adaptation earned six Oscars including Best Picture.
Barks got her start on the BBC talent competition series I’d Do Anything in 2008, where a group of hopefuls auditioned for the role of Nancy in the West End production of Oliver! The actress came in third place. She made her West End debut as Eponine in Les Misérables, before appearing in the production's 25th anniversary concert at London’s O2 Arena and the subsequent film adaptation.
