American Idiot fans, book your tickets to Connecticut! Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will compose new songs for the world premiere of These Paper Bullets, a play by Rolin Jones (The Jammer), according to The New York Times. Directed by Jackson Gay, the production is a new take on Much Ado About Nothing, and is scheduled to open in March 2014.
These Paper Bullets is a rock retelling of the Shakespeare classic. Set in London, the play tells the story of a band from Liverpool who grapples with love and the music industry. No casting has been announced.
Armstrong wrote the book, music and lyrics for American Idiot, which opened on April 20, 2010 at Broadway’s St. James Theatre. The production earned a Tony Award for Best Lighting Design, and two additional nominations, including Best Musical. Armstrong starred as St. Jimmy during several engagements throughout the run, and earned a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award for Favorite Replacement. After putting Green Day's tour on hold to get treatment for substance abuse, Armstrong is once again performing throughout the U.S. with the band.
