British TV star Keeley Hawes (Ashes to Ashes, Upstairs Downstairs and Spooks) joins previously announced stars Lee Evans and Sheila Hancock in the West End world premiere production of Clive Exton’s Barking in Essex, according to U.K.’s Daily Mail. Directed by Harry Burton, the dark comedy begins performances at the Wyndham’s Theatre on September 6, and officially opens on September 16.
Barking in Essex tells the story of Algie Parker, the most notorious gangster in Essex. As he comes home to collect his money—over 3 million pounds in untraceable notes—there’s something his family has forgotten to mention. In order to keep Algie from finding out the secret, his family must figure out a way to hide it before his arrival. Hawes plays Evan’s wife, one of the shrewder members of the crime family.
In addition to her three major TV series, Hawes voiced the character of Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider video game series. She was awarded the “Best U.K. Television Actress Award" at the 2008 Glamour Awards for her role as Alex Drake in Ashes to Ashes.
