Lincoln Center Theater will host a limited engagement of Daniel Beaty’s solo play Mr. Joy. Billed as a special LCT3 event, Mr. Joy will play 11 performances in April at the Claire Tow Theater.
At the start of the show, something has happened to Mr. Joy, a Chinese-American who has run a shoe repair shop in Harlem for decades. Through an array of characters all played by Beaty, Mr. Joy's customers and others discover the nature of the incident, and realize the impact he has had on their lives and their changing community.
Mr. Joy includes direction by Sheryl Kaller, lighting by Michael Gilliam, projections by Josh Lehrer and original music and sound by Lindsay Jones.
Beaty has written and starred in the off-Broadway productions of Through the Night and Emergence-See!. He is the recipient of AUDELCO, Ovation, NAACP and Obie Awards.
The workshop production of Mr. Joy runs April 8, 9, 12 through 15 and 17 through 21.
