Yo, Adrian! The new musical adaptation of Rocky, which premiered in Hamburg, Germany in 2012, could be making the move to Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre as early as spring 2014, according to The New York Times. As previously announced, the long-running musical Mamma Mia! will be moving from its current home at the Winter Garden Theatre to the Broadhurst Theatre in late 2013. No official dates or casting for Rocky have been set.
Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film, Rocky features a score by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime) and a book by Thomas Meehan (The Producers, Hairspray). The German production, billed as Rocky - Das Musical, premiered in November 2012 starring Drew Sarich as the Italian Stallion. Alex Timbers directed the production, which also featured several hit songs from the original film soundtrack, including “Gonna Fly Now” and “Eye of the Tiger.”
Rocky tells the story of Rocky Balboa, a struggling boxer who works as a debt collector in Philadelphia. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed comes to town and challenges a struggling boxer to fight in an exhibition match, Rocky sees it as his chance to finally prove himself as a boxer.
