Ever since we heard the totally fetch news that a Mean Girls musical was in the works, we’ve been dying to know who will snag the role of Regina George, the domineering ringleader of the Plastics. Amanda Seyfried, who starred as ditzy Plastics member Karen in the 2004 film, told Allure magazine that she’d love to star in the new musical adaptation. But not as Karen—as Regina!
“I desperately want to be Regina,” Seyfried told Allure. The actress, who has yet to make her Broadway debut, starred in the film adaptations of Mamma Mia! and most recently, Les Misérables. Seyfried also recently expressed interest in playing Glinda in Wicked on Broadway, but admitted she would need “another two years of voice lessons” to get ready. Does Seyfried have what it takes to play Regina? She’d better get started on her all-carb diet!
As previously announced, the Mean Girls musical is currently in development by original screenwriter Tina Fey and her husband Jeff Richmond. Although no casting has been announced, Richmond promised us one thing for sure: Gretchen Wieners will sing a song called “Fetch.” No word on whether Gretchen's father, the inventor of Toaster Strudel, would be pleased to hear about Seyfried’s decision to cast herself as Regina.
