With the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards just days away, fans are voting like mad for their favorite Broadway shows, actors and more. This weekend, we also gave the fans the chance to show love to their favorite new off-Broadway musical. The results are in, and two-unlikely love stories and a bio-musical topped the readers’ picks. Scroll below to see which new off-Broadway musicals from the 2012-2013 season took the honors.
Dogfight - 28%
Second Stage Theatre presented the musical adaptation of the heart-breaking indie film Dogfight. Directed by Tony winner Joe Mantello and featuring music by up-and-coming songwriting team Pasek and Paul, this hot summer ticket premiered off-Broadway July 16, 2012 and ran through August 19. What really made this musical standout was the respective break-out performances by Lindsay Mendez and Derek Klena as Rose and Eddie Birdlace. Look for the cast recording April 30.
Forever Dusty - 22%
Kirsten Holly Smith wrote and starred as the title character in the off-Broadway musical Forever Dusty. The show, which played at New World Stages from November 2012 to April 2013, charted the career highs and personal lows of '60s pop star Dusty Springfield. Co-starring Christina Sajous, this musical was the most entertaining history lesson of the off-Broadway season.
F#%king Up Everything - 13%
Currently running at off-Broadway's Elektra Theatre, this rock musical is a hipster love story that really connects with modern audiences. The show features next generation theater stars like Max Crumm, Jason Gotay, Dawn Cantwell, George Zalazar and standout newcomer Lisa Birnbaum.
