The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Scott Ellis
Nominated for Best Direction of a Musical, The Mystery of Edwin Drood
"I have three-and-a-half-year-old twins and we were getting ready for school, so I sat them on the couch after I fed them and I said, 'Okay, here's the deal. You might hear Daddy's name and you might not.' So we just sat there and when the name came up, they turned around and said, 'That's your name!' and I said 'Yes!' and then they got up and started playing. I thought, 'And there it is. Done.' All in perspective. I'm really thrilled, mainly because when a show closes, you never know if they'll remember you. It was one of those great experiences from the beginning to the end, and I was so pleased with the extraordinary group in this show, from top to bottom. For Stephanie [J. Block], it's been a dream to be nominated, and Will [Chase]... I had cast someone else in this role and at the last minute Will came in, so I just thought, this is how it's supposed to be. I wish I had the day off to enjoy things, but I'm going to be back in rehearsal, and honestly, that's the way it should be. And then I'll go home and fix my kids dinner and give them a bath and put them to bed! Having kids puts things into perspective!"
