The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Courtney B. Vance
Nominated for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play, Lucky Guy
"I was sleeping and my mother called me. Typical way. She was screaming and everybody else in the room was screaming, so I had to wake myself up. I'm thankful—the first [Tony nomination, for Fences] was the most special because it was with James Earl Jones in my Broadway debut. But I set out to do something with this play, and I'm just thankful to [director] George [C. Wolfe] for the trust in this particular role. Hap [Hairston] turns out to be driving this ship a lot of the time. I'll always be indebted to George because it's a very difficult journey to navigate, and he entrusted me with it. I'm indebted and very happy for him...I was going to go to the Y and swim, but these phone calls are taking up my Y time, so I have a workout at 2, and then I'll do a little food shopping and come back and get ready for the show."
