The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Patina Miller
Nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, Pippin
"I was asleep and my new fiancé [David Mars] came in to let me know. Being woken up like that is kind of crazy! I don’t know what to do with myself. I haven’t even called my mom yet! She’ll be the first person I tell. This is a triumph for everyone in Pippin. We’ve been working together since July of last year, making discoveries about this production and the reinvention of the material, so this is just mind-blowing! It’s really magical and amazing. It’s a very different feeling than being nominated for Sister Act, because I had been out of the country for two years doing that show in the West End. It was my Broadway debut, I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t get to enjoy the moment as much as I should have. This time around, it’s just a big lovefest! Today I’m going to get a little workout in, walk the dogs and meet my manager Jeremy [Katz] for lunch. The veggie burger from Hillstone is out of this world, and I love myself some fries. I let myself have fries on my bad days…so maybe I’ll have a few fries!"
