The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Judith Ivey
Nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play, The Heiress
"This is a great way to start your day, isn’t it? I completely forgot the nominations were happening, so my agent called to tell me. My first reaction was, ‘Oh, that happened already?!’ I just moved into a new apartment and I’ve been waiting for months for them to renovate. I’m staring at 40 boxes right now that haven’t been unpacked because they haven’t finished the kitchen shelves. But as soon as I found out, I called my mom and dad. My daughter, Maddie Braine, called me and was yelling into the phone—she was so excited. For me, being nominated always feels the same. If you enjoyed doing the work, it was a great job to have—being nominated for an award on top of it, it just doesn’t get any better. Today I’ve gotta deal with my contractor who’s coming to look at the apartment. So maybe I’ll be a little nicer to him today—I’ll give him a break since I’ve been nominated!"
