The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Pam MacKinnon
Nominated for Best Direction of a Play, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
"I’m in Los Angeles, so I’m a little sleepy, but I feel but fantastic. And relieved! I was so nervous, I woke up before the nominations but I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to find the information. I was sleepily trying to do some lame Google search, and that’s when my phone started to beep. The first text I got came from Crystal Dickinson, who starred in Clybourne Park [for which MacKinnon earned a Tony nomination last year], and that was so sweet. My Virginia Woolf friends are so dear to me—I’ve known Edward [Albee] for 13 years and I’ve known Amy [Morton] and Tracy [Letts] for seven, and it’s great to go through this together; it’s great to have these comrades in arms. I wish I was on the same coast as my boyfriend, John Procaccino [currently starring in Nikolai and the Others], but I’m in L.A. for some meetings. It’s nice to know that when I shake hands with these film and TV types today, I’ll have a great opening line!"
