The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Carolee Carmello
Nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical, Scandalous
“I wasn’t sure what time they were making the announcements, but when I saw they were doing it at 8:30, I thought, “Obviously, I’m not going back to sleep now!” Usually they do the Leading Actress in a Musical category pretty late in the game, but they did it fairly early, so I was spared a little more stomach acid than I might have been! It was very flattering to be remembered for a show that closed so long ago. This is the third time I’ve been nominated for a show that’s not running anymore, and it’s always so nice that the committee will think back on shows that are no longer with us. It’s bittersweet, though, because I wish I could still be doing it, and I wish that all the people I worked with and who created the show would be acknowledged. But I’m going to try to enjoy it on their behalf, and be the representative of the show. [Scandalous scribe] Kathie Lee [Gifford] called me. In fact, she left a message that her producer from the Today Show said they wanted to do a phone interview during her hour, so I’ll have to wake up my voice a little bit. I’m still in my pjs, so I hope the Today Show doesn’t expect to do video chat or something!”
