The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Douglas Carter Beane
Best Book of a Musical, Cinderella
“I came to this philosophy last year, that you should enjoy a nomination or an award, but don’t be upset if you don’t get a nomination or award! That’s sort of my healthy philosophy, and it really worked this year. It literally was like, ‘This [Cinderella] book, but not this play [The Nance]? Well, all right, I’m cool with that!’ So it worked out just fine. I was depressed for exactly half of a category, and then I was perfectly fine. I’m really proud of it, and I love the work. Both shows were perfect experiences for me, and I’m very excited that three actors from the musical and one actor from the play have all been nominated. That’s four people who really owe me, and that’s the most we can hope for—people owing me! And I’m all excited about the Broadway.com Awards; it’s all about that!”
