Andy Blankenbuehler
Nominated for Best Choreography, Bring It On: The Musical
"We all invested so much time and energy into Bring It On, and anytime you do a new musical, it's such a big part of your life. You're always aware that it's present, even after the show goes away. It was a very dear project to me since it was my first time helming anything. Not that I was expecting anything [on Tony nomination day], but emotionally I was hopeful because it was very important to me. In the Heights was such a special thing that there was a big fear I couldn't do it again. It's always great to come back with material that reaches people. [The cast] always touches base with each other; I love the fact that we created such a big family with so many non-traditional performers and people new to the business. It was an amazing thing to be around 32 Broadway debuts, and the fact that they'll be able to experience the Tonys now is really amazing. My son said yesterday, 'Well, of course you're gonna get a nomination, because I helped you choreograph it!' I think tonight I'll have a nice dinner with my wife and two kids—but I will say that the last Tony-go-round, I got home and there was a surprise party waiting for me. So I don't know what's going to happen!"
