The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Rob McClure
Nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical, Chaplin
“I was watching from my house in Philadelphia and they said my name—my wife gasped and I said, ‘Holy shit!’ Then my phone beeped and it was a text from my mom saying, “Holy shit!” [Laughs.] I recently did the lights for a production of Spelling Bee at my old school, New Milford High School, and I got a text from a group of kids saying they heard the school erupt when I was announced. They were watching in their first period classes. I became a puddle when I got that message. There are millions of people who I share this honor with, and most importantly my Chaplin family. There’s a group of us that got hat-and-moustache tattoos after the show, and this morning we had some ‘tattoos unite’ text messaging! There’s a place in Philly called Federal Donuts and [Chaplin alums] Hayley Podschun and Tim Hughes had a courier service deliver donuts to my house this morning—so I’ll be answering phone calls and eating all these donuts today!”
