The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start buzzing with texts and calls for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is thrilled to be among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2013 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Bartlett Sher
Best Direction of a Play, Golden Boy
“I was thrilled! Are you kidding me? Especially since we’re not open anymore. I couldn’t have been happier. I’m very superstitious and very anxious about these things, so I try to pretend it’s not happening. My main tradition [on nomination day] is to try not to be around when it’s actually announced. I’m not the kind of person who would watch it on TV. So I took my daughter to school, was sitting on a bus, then got on the subway, and when I got off the subway, I got a phone call from my wife who said, ‘Yes! Yes! Yes!’ and how many nominations we got. It was great. I actually had lunch today with [Golden Boy stars] Tony Shalhoub, Danny Burstein and Danny Mastrogiorgio. We all sat around and talked. I hadn’t seen them all at the same time since we closed, so it was great.”
