One of the big surprises of the 2013 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards was the winner for Favorite Play, the short-lived stage adaptation of Truman Capote’s classic novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The show’s hunky leading man Cory Michael Smith was on hand to accept the award on behalf of his entire company.
“I’m so thankful for the experience of having gotten to share [Capote’s] prose and say that every night to an audience and tell the story that so many people love,” Smith gushed backstage at the BACAs after his win. “We do what we do because we want to touch people. Whether it’s to make people laugh or make people cry or in my case to increase empathy in people’s lives. That’s why we do it.”
What makes the award even more special for Smith is knowing that people will remember the play, despite it closing after just a month on Broadway. “What we were trying to do is honor Capote’s language and his story, and I hope we did that with some gusto and some integrity,” said Smith. “I feel very fortunate that it’s being recognized. It’s very special.”
