The orphans are back! Sheffield Theatres' artistic director Daniel Evans (My Fair Lady) will helm a new revival of the beloved musical Oliver! at the U.K.'s Crucible Theatre. The production will begin performances November 29, with an official opening night set for December 16. Featuring a book, music and lyrics by Lionel Bart, the production will play a limited engagement through January 25. No casting has been announced.
Based on the iconic Charles Dickens novel, Oliver! originally premiered in the West End on June 30, 1960 before transferring to Broadway ‘s Imperial Theatre on January 6, 1963. The production starred Georgia Brown as Nancy, Clive Revill as Fagin and Bruce Prochnik as Oliver. The production earned three Tony Awards, including Best Composer and Lyricist (Bart). A recent revival featuring Les Miserables film star Samantha Barks as Nancy, toured the U.K. from 2011 through 2013.
The production features choreography by Alistair David, set and costume design by Peter McKintosh, lighting design by Howard Harrison, sound design by Simon Baker and musical direction by Jonathan Gill.
Oliver! is the final production in the 2013 season at Sheffield Theatres, following The History Boys from May 16 through June 8, This Is My Family from June 19 through July 20, A Passionate Woman from September 10 through 21 and The Winter’s Tale from October 2 through November 2.
