Original Broadway stars Colman Domingo, Forrest McClendon and more will reprise their roles in the London premiere of The Scottsboro Boys at the New Vic. Directed by Susan Stroman, the new production begins performances October 18, with an official opening night on October 29.
The Scottsboro Boys features music by John Kander and Fred Ebb, lyrics by Kander a book by David Thompson. In addition to Domingo as Mr. Bones, McClendon as Mr. Tambo, original cast members Christian Dante-White and Clinton Roane will reprise their roles as Charles Weems and Roy Wright, respectively. The new production will also star Julian Glover (The Voysey Inheritance) as The Interlocutor, Dawn Hope (Porgy and Bess) as the Lady, Adebayo Bolaji (Skyfall) as Clarence Norris, Rohan Pinnock-Hamilton (Riverdance) as Olen Montgomery and Carl Spencer as Andy Wright, as well as ensemble members Martin Bishop, Susan Reynolds and Jordan Shaw. The Scottsboro Boys will be presented by the Young Vic and Catherine Schreiber, the Tony-winning producer of Clybourne Park.
Based on the true story of a 1931 trial in Alabama, The Scottsboro Boys tells the story of nine young black men between the ages of 12 and 19 who are traveling on a train through Scottsboro, Alabama, in search of a new life. But their lives are changed forever when two white women falsely accuse the nine of rape. The musical premiered off-Broadway before opening at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre in October 2010. The production, directed and choreographed by Stroman, earned 12 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for both Domingo and McClendon.
In addition to The Scottsboro Boys, Domingo’s additional Broadway credits include Passing Strange, Chicago and Well. On film, he starred in Lincoln and True Crime. Domingo wrote and starred in off-Broadway's Wild With Happy and A Boy and His Soul. McClendon made his Broadway debut in The Scottsboro Boys. He has appeared off-Broadway in Faith Journey.
