It was a rough weekend to be a Broadway actor on an NBC show. Along with axing theater centric Smash and Go On, starring Tony winner Laura Benanti, the Peacock has also decided to bring down the curtain on The New Normal after just one season.
Produced by Ryan Murphy, The New Normal, which starred Tony Award nominee Andrew Rannells and featured a slew of stage vets including Ellen Barkin and Jackie Hoffman, tells the story of Brian and David; a gay couple who hire a surrogate to carry their child. Throughout their unconventional journey to parenthood, The New Normal depicted that there is no such thing as “normal” when it comes to family.
In addition to Rannells, Barkin and Hoffman, Normal also starred Justin Bartha, NeNe Leakes and sure-to-be-huge Bebe Wood. The comedy aired its final episode on April 2, and though we’re sad to see it go, at least this frees up Rannells to come back to the Great White Way. We’re here with open arms, Andrew!
