In the weeks leading up to the 2013 Tony telecast, Broadway.com is posting video clips of favorite Tony memories of this year’s nominees, with their own commentary. Sometimes the most memorable moments in a live TV show are the unscripted ones—and such was the case on June 7, 2009, in the opening seconds of Guys and Dolls' musical number at Radio City Music Hall. Stark Sands, a 2013 Best Actor in a Musical nominee for playing Charlie Price in Kinky Boots, offers this remembrance.
“Tituss Burgess is a friend of mine, and he stole the show every night doing ‘Sit Down, You're Rockin’ the Boat’ as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls. When he started singing the song on the Tonys, his head mike failed. Somebody ran on stage and handed him a microphone! He didn't even look at the person, he just reached out and grabbed it, put it up to his face and kept singing. I get chills thinking about it.”
