The 2013 Tony Awards are coming up fast, and we can't wait to find out which show takes home the prize for Best Musical Revival: Cinderella, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Pippin or Annie. In the meantime, we went on a little YouTube binge to find the most awesome, hilarious and downright weird interpretations of these Tony-nominated revivals from all over the world. First up, Annie is delighting audiences from Belgium to Japan, and you won’t believe these international tributes to Broadway’s iconic redhead.
SPAIN
The students of Spain’s Arte, Escuela de Danza performing arts school completely dominate “Hard Knock Life” in their Christmas recital. They’re lip-syncing, but we think you’ll agree that their impressive use of mops more than makes up for their vocal shortcomings.
THE NETHERLANDS
In this 2012 Dutch production of Annie, Jenny Arean channels Miss Hannigan by way of Carol Channing in a comic interpretation of “Little Girls” that transcends language barriers.
MEXICO
This Mexican Coca-Cola commercial features a cab driver, a weatherman and pretty much the entire country singing Broadway’s most uplifting song, “Tomorrow”—uh, we mean “Manana." If only we could convince U.S. soccer teams to sing showtunes on national TV!
BELGIUM
After starring in both Japanese and Belgian productions, pint-sized powerhouse Haruka Sugihara is the overseas queen of Annie. But the real star of this “Hard Knock Life” video is the weird English translation. We never knew Annie longed for “a sister to pet you over your hair.” In a word, WTF.
JAPAN
Speaking of WTF, check out this intense Japanese reality series where hopefuls audition to star in a professional production of Annie. The girls are adorable, but we’re just glad Broadway open calls don’t include this much crying.
