Tony winner Lea Salonga has plenty of projects on her plate, between headlining her solo show Back to Before at the Cafe Carlyle, judging TV’s The Voice in the Philippines and workshopping the new musical Allegiance. But the Broadway alum is also keeping her fingers crossed for a gig on the forthcoming Miss Saigon movie—and this time, she wants to work behind the scenes.
“I’d love to be involved [with the film] in some way, and I don’t have to be—don’t put me onscreen,” Salonga tells Broadway.com Editor-in-Chief Paul Wontorek on the forthcoming episode of Show People. “I would love to be involved in helping a Kim, to help her get prepared for this. That I would like to do, ‘cause I’m gonna be coaching on The Voice. I'd love to do more of it.”
Salonga hasn’t booked the job yet (what are you waiting for, Cameron Mackintosh?!) but she already has advice for the yet-to-be determined cast of the film: “The Engineer is kind of an M.C., Cabaret sort of a role. So that one, I think the acting would need to be stronger than the singing,” she says. “But for me, Kim, Chris, Ellen, Thuy, you please bring those vocal cords. Please.”
Stay tuned for more words of wisdom from Salonga on this week’s episode of Show People!
