Dancing With the Stars pros Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy will return to Broadway this summer in Forever Tango. The star dancers have signed on for the first three weeks of the run, July 9 through July 28, at the Walter Kerr Theatre. Created and directed by Luis Bravo, Forever Tango is set to open on July 14 for a limited engagement through September 15.
Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy made their Broadway debuts in the 2009 dance spectacular Burn the Floor. They were engaged at the time, but later ended their romantic relationship. Smirnoff won the 13th season of Dancing With the Stars partnered with Army vet J. R. Martinez and most recently made the finals (ultimately placing third) with football star Jacoby Jones. Chmerkovskiy, who choreographed La Reve at the Wynn Las Vegas, did not appear in the most recent season of DTWS.
Forever Tango features a company of 16 dancers, a vocalist and an 11-piece orchestra. Grammy winner Gilberto Santa Rosa will join Smirnoff and Chmerkovskiy for the initial three weeks of the Broadway engagement.
