Renée Elise Goldsberry (Rent, The Color Purple) will star in Encores! Off-Center production of I’m Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road. Directed and choreographed by three-time Tony winner Kathleen Marshall (Anything Goes), the musical will run at New York City Center July 24 through 27. Additional casting to be announced.
I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road follows Heather (Goldsberry), a pop star who ditches the romantic songs of her past and attempts a comeback by performing personal songs that reflect women’s changing roles and attitudes. I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road includes a book and lyrics by Gretchen Cryer and music by Nancy Ford. The Encores! production will be musically directed by Chris Fenwick.
Goldsberry originated the role of Nettie in The Color Purple and was the last actress to play the role of Mimi in Rent. Her additional Broadway credits include The Lion King and Good People. She has appeared on screen in All About You, Ally McBeal, One Life to Live and The Good Wife.
I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road has never appeared on Broadway. The show debuted in 1978 at the Public Theater and starred Gretchen Cryer in the role of Heather. Betty Buckley, Carol Hall and Phyllis Newman later took over the role during its long off-Broadway run.
