Members of the original off-Broadway cast of Charles Busch’s The Divine Sister will reunite for a new production at L.A. Theatre Works set for July 11 through 14. Original director Carl Andress will return to helm Busch, Alison Fraser and Julie Halston in the roles they created off-Broadway in 2010.
Busch will reprise his role as Mother Superior, with Fraser as Sister Walburga and Halston as Sister Acacius. They’ll be joined by Emily Bergl (who wraps her Shakespeare in the Park gig on June 30) as Agnes, Maxwell Caulfield as Brother Venerius and Juliet Mills as Mrs. Levinson.
A loving spoof of classic religious films, The Divine Sister tells the story of the indomitable Mother Superior, who is determined to build a new school for her convent, even as she deals with sexual hysteria, a young postulant with “visions,” a mysterious visiting nun and a former suitor intent on luring her away from her vows.
The Divine Sister premiered at Theater for the New City’s Cino Theater on February 6, 2010 before it transferred to SoHo Playhouse on September 22, 2010, where it ran for eight months.
