Sultry musical Murder Ballad is taking its final breath earlier than expected. The show, which stars Caissie Levy, Will Swenson, Rebecca Naomi Jones and John Ellison Conlee, was originally scheduled to play a limited engagement through September 29; it will now close at off-Broadway’s Union Square Theatre on July 21. At the time of its closing, Murder Ballad will have played 17 previews and 70 regular performances.
Murder Ballad tells the story of Sara (Levy), a thirty-something New Yorker who seems to have it all—but her dangerous downtown past lingers enticingly in front of her. Sara is torn between her reliable husband Michael (Conlee) and reckless ex-boyfriend Tom (Swenson). Murder Ballad explores the complications of love, the compromises we make and the betrayals that can ultimately undo us.
The musical, directed by Trip Cullman, features book and lyrics by Julia Jordan and music and lyrics by Juliana Nash. It opened at the Union Square Theatre after a sold-out engagement at Manhattan Theatre Club's Stage II, with Tony winner Karen Olivo playing the part of Sara.
The cast album was released on May 28 by Yellow Sound Label.
