Choir Boy, a play with gospel music by Tarell Alvin McCraney, opens July 2. Directed by Trip Cullman, Choir Boy stars Tony winner Chuck Cooper, Austin Pendleton and Jeremy Pope. The Manhattan Theatre Club production will run through July 21 at New York City Center.
Set at the Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys, Choir Boy tells the story of Pharus (Pope), who wants nothing more than to take his rightful place as leader of the school’s legendary gospel choir. In addition to Cooper, Pendleton and Pope, Choir Boy features Nicholas L. Ashe, Kyle Beltran, Grantham Coleman and Wallace Smith.
The Choir Boy creative team includes scenic and costume designer David Zinn, lighting designer Peter Kaczorowski, sound designer Fitz Patton and musical director Jason Michael Webb.
