Adepero Oduye will make her Broadway debut in the revival of Horton Foote’s The Trip to Bountiful beginning July 16, succeeding Tony nominee Condola Rashad as Thelma. Rashad played her final performance in the production on July 14 to star in the forthcoming Broadway revival of Romeo and Juliet opposite Orlando Bloom.
Directed by Michael Wilson, The Trip to Bountiful also stars Tony winner Cicely Tyson, Cuba Gooding Jr., Tony nominee Vanessa Williams and Tom Wopat. The drama tells the story of Carrie Watts (Tyson), an elderly woman who dreams of returning to her small hometown of Bountiful, Texas, one last time—against the wishes of her overprotective son and domineering daughter-in-law.
Oduye’s film and TV credits include Pariah, Half Nelson, The Tested, Louie and The Unusuals. She played salon assistant Annelle opposite Rashad (as Shelby) in the 2012 TV movie adaptation of Steel Magnolias. On stage, she has appeared in regional productions of Eclipsed, The Bluest Eye and Fela!
