Tony-nominated Nobody Loves You star Rory O’Malley got engaged to his partner, Gerold Schroeder, on July 21, according to O’Malley’s Facebook page. No wedding date has yet been announced.
“Last night, the love of my life Gerold Schroeder asked me to marry him and I said yes,” O’Malley posted on Facebook. “I never thought I'd be this excited for a lifetime of Mariah Carey and watching show choir. I am the luckiest man on earth. The O'Malley/Schroeder family parties are going to rock!"
O’Malley, who has been vocal about his stance on marriage equality, recently chatted with Broadway.com about his desire to wed now that the Defense of Marriage Act has been overturned. “When I came out, I thought coming out meant giving up a marriage and a family,” explained O'Malley, a co-founder of the Broadway Impact advocacy group. “That was, to me, the most difficult part of the coming-out process. And that was probably the hardest part for my mother, who will be the most kick-ass, amazing, wonderful grandmother this earth has ever seen. I know now that this is not only going to happen, it’s going to happen for me, and for LGBT kids forever from now on. Their dreams about their future will include marriage and a family—or not, but it’s their option.”
O’Malley made his Broadway debut in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, then garnered a Tony Award nomination for his performance in The Book of Mormon. Schroeder works at New York City advertising firm Laird and Partners, and the couple have been dating for over five years. O'Malley and Schroeder appeared together in a Gap ad in May 2012 to support marriage equality.
