TV addicts got their fix on August 11 when AMC’s Emmy-winning drama Breaking Bad returned for its final season. The series charts the moral decline of Walter White, a former high school chemistry teacher who turns into a drug lord after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. In honor of the premiere (and this hilarious musical parody), we asked you to pick which Broadway actor you’d want to see play White if the show were ever adapted into a real musical. Below are your top three picks.
1. Norbert Leo Butz- 29%
Two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz is such a chameleon, it’s no wonder readers chose him to bring Walter White to life on stage. Butz’s resume varies from The Last Five Years to Wicked to Catch Me if You Can to the upcoming Big Fish. If any Broadway actor could take audiences on the five-season-long unravel of Walter White over the course of just one evening, it’s Butz.
2. Michael Cerveris – 13%
Tony Award winner Michael Cerveris is the go-to guy for scary. He broke out as the titular pinball wizard in The Who's Tommy, he won a Tony Award in 2004 as John Wilkes Booth in Assassins, then he slayed half of London as Sondheim’s murderous barber in Sweeney Todd. If you’re looking for a terrifying Walter White, Cerveris is your guy.
3. Raul Esparza – 9%
Four-time Tony nominee Raul Esparza isn’t afraid of a controversial or dark musical (Taboo, Rocky Horror, Cabaret), so perhaps Breaking Bad would be right up his alley. The only shame would be to shave that beautiful head of hair!
