Broadway's Matilda welcomes Tony nominee Craig Bierko and Jill Paice to the "revolting" company beginning September 3 at the Shubert Theatre. Bierko takes over the role of evil Crunchem Hall headmistress Miss Trunchbull, succeeding Tony nominee Bertie Carvel, and Paice is playing Matilda Wormwood's sweet school teacher and champion, replacing Tony nominee Lauren Ward. Carvel and Ward played their final performances on September 1.
Directed by Tony winner Matthew Warchus, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary girl who dreams of a better life. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, Matilda dares to take a stand and change her destiny. Based on the beloved Roald Dahl novel of the same name, the musical features a book by Tony winner Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tony nominee Tim Minchin.
The cast of Matilda also includes Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro in the title role, Lesli Margherita as Miss Wormwood, Tony winner Gabriel Ebert as Mr. Wormwood and Karen Aldridge as Mrs. Phelps. Matilda features choreography by Peter Darling, set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone and sound design by Simon Baker.
Matilda opened on Broadway on April 11, 2013. The musical earned four Tony Awards: Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor (Ebert), Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design.
