When Ethan Hawke takes the stage as the ruthless Macbeth in the Lincoln Center Theater production this fall, he will be doing it for Americans everywhere. As we've noted, Shakespeare's bloody tragedy is super popular right now, but Hawke remains the only American-born actor to take up the sword (Branagh is Irish, Cumming is Scottish and Fassbender is German).
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the Oscar and Tony nominee and co-star Selena Gomez to chat about their new action film Getaway, and when asked about Macbeth, Hawke said, “It’s what I’ve been spending the summer doing, prepping for that. Unfortunately, these British punks, they grow up on this stuff; so, I'm trying to do America proud. Stand up and do some American Shakespeare."
Directed by Tony winner Jack O’Brien, Broadway’s Macbeth begins performances at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre on October 24 and opens November 21. Tickets are now on sale for the production, which co-stars English actress Anne-Marie Duff as Lady Macbeth.
