Craig Bierko, who was to begin performances September 3 in the role of Miss Trunchbull in Matilda, is delaying his first performance in the show due to a "minor injury," according to a production spokesperson. Understudy Chris Hoch will perform the role until Bierko's new start date is determined. As previously scheduled, Jill Paice will join the company as Miss Honey.
Directed by Matthew Warchus, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary girl who dreams of a better life. Armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, Matilda dares to take a stand and change her destiny. Based on the beloved Roald Dahl novel of the same name, the musical features a book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
Hoch's Broadway credits include La Cage aux Folles, Shrek, Spamalot, Dracula and Beauty and the Beast. He's appeared off-Broadway in Far From Heaven, Die, Mommie, Die! and Face the Music.
The cast of Matilda also includes Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence, Bailey Ryon and Milly Shapiro in the title role, Lesli Margherita as Miss Wormwood, Tony winner Gabriel Ebert as Mr. Wormwood and Karen Aldridge as Mrs. Phelps. Matilda features choreography by Peter Darling, set and costume design by Rob Howell, lighting design by Hugh Vanstone and sound design by Simon Baker.
Matilda opened on Broadway on April 11, 2013. The musical earned four Tony Awards: Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actor (Ebert), Best Lighting Design and Best Scenic Design.
