Rehearsals haven’t even begun and already one of the hottest tickets in town this spring is the newest Broadway revival of A Raisin in the Sun, led by bona fide movie star (and Tony-winning stage actor) Denzel Washington. Tickets are now on sale for Lorraine Hansberry’s all-American classic, set to start previews at the Barrymore Theatre on March 8 and run through June 15.
Washington is joined by Diahann Carroll, Anika Noni Rose, Sophie Okonedo, Stephen Tyrone Williams, Jason Dirden, Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Cromer and Bryce Clyde Jenkins. The company will be led by Tony-nominated director Kenny Leon, who previously directed Washington to his first Tony in the 2010 revival of Fences.
A Raisin in the Sun takes place in the late ‘50s in a south side Chicago apartment. The play (the title is taken from a Langston Hughes poem) chronicles the lives of the members of an African-American family, specifically matriarch Lena (Carroll), who plans to buy a home in an all-white neighborhood when she receives a hefty insurance check. Her son Walter (Washington) dreams of buying a liquor store and being his own man, and her daughter Beneatha (Rose) dreams of attending medical school. The tensions and prejudice they face create the drama in this beloved play.
