Music superstars Toni Braxton and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds are the latest artists to be added to the rotating roster of special guest star vocalists in the upcoming Broadway musical After Midnight. Braxton and Edmonds will join the company from March 18 through March 30, 2014, following guest star k.d. lang, who appears in the musical from February 11 through March 9. After Midnight kicks off with Fantasia Barrino as the lead vocalist when the show begins previews at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on October 18, with opening night set for November 3.
After Midnight also stars Tony winner Adriane Lenox and Dule Hill, as well as Julius “Iglide” Chisolm, Virgil J. Gadson, Karine Plantadit, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Jared Grimes, Everett Bradley, Cedric Neal, T. Oliver Reid, Monroe Kent III, Carmen Ruby Floyd, Rosena M. Hill Jackson, Bryonha Marie Parham, Marija Abney, Phillip Attmore, Christopher Broughton, Taeler Elyse Cyrus, C.K. Edwards, Danielle Herbert, Bahiyah Hibah, David Jennings, Erin N. Moore, Justin Prescott, Desmond Richardson, Allysa Shorte, Monique Smith and Daniel J. Watts.
Set against a narrative of Langston Hughes’ poetry, After Midnight celebrates Duke Ellington’s years at Harlem’s famed Cotton Club using his original arrangements and performed by a world-class big band of 17 musicians. The show is conceived by Jack Viertel and features musical direction by Wynton Marsalis and musical supervision by Daryl Waters.
Braxton and Edmonds will release their first album of duets, Love, Marriage & Divorce, on December 3. The duo have 16 Grammy Awards between them and first collaborated on Braxton’s 1992 debut Give U My Heart. Braxton has appeared on Broadway in Beauty and the Beast and Aida, while Babyface will be making his Broadway debut.
