One of England’s juiciest political scandals was the so-called “Profumo Affair,” a perfect storm of sex and spying that played out in the tabloids in 1963. War Secretary John Profumo lost his career over an affair with call girl Christine Keeler, but a lesser known figure in the scandal is now the subject of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical Stephen Ward. A society osteopath who partied with stars and politicians, Ward found himself at the unfortunate center of the Profumo affair. On September 30, Lloyd Webber, director Richard Eyre, title star Alexander Hanson and co-stars Charlotte Blackledge (as showgirl Mandy Rice-Davies) and Charlotte Spencer (Christine Keeler) met the press at a preview event at The Box in Soho. Make plans now for a holiday trip to London, where the world premiere of Stephen Ward begins previews on December 3 at the Aldwych Theatre!
