Super Sutton is swooping in to New York City! Two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster and Kevin Smith Kirkwood will join a slew of stars in the previously announced superhero musical comedy The Astonishing Return of…The Protagonists! The show will be presented as part of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre’s 25th Annual Festival of New Musicals. The Astonishing Return of…The Protagonists! will be performed October 17 and 18 at off-Broadway's New World Stages.
Directed by Tony winner Christopher Gattelli, the new musical has a book and lyrics by Kevin Del Aguila, with music by Michael Shaieb. In addition to Foster and Smith Kirkwood, the production will feature Andy Karl, Kara Lindsay, Marc Kudisch, Christopher Sieber, Douglas Sills, Tyler Maynard, Todd Alan Johnson, Aurelia Williams, Alice Lee and Carlos L. Encinias.
Foster won Tony Awards for Thoroughly Modern Millie and Anything Goes. Her additional Broadway credits include The Drowsy Chaperone, Shrek the Musical, Young Frankenstein, Little Women, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Annie, Grease and Les Miserables. On the small screen, she recently played ballet teacher Michelle Simms on ABC Family’s Bunheads.
Other performers joining the NAMT festival’s new lineup of musicals include William Parry (Memphis national tour), Natalie Venetia Belcon (Avenue Q), Mel Johnson Jr. (Jekyll & Hyde), Crystal Joy (Motown the Musical), Bailey Ryon (Matilda), Julia Mattison (Godspell), Graham Rowat (Mamma Mia!) and Melanie Vaughan (Parade).
