Little Miss Sunshine is taking an off-Broadway road trip! The new musical comedy begins performances October 15, starring Will Swenson, Stephanie J. Block and Rory O’Malley, with nine-year-old Hannah Rose Nordberg making her off-Broadway debut. Directed by James Lapine, the Second Stage production is set to open November 14 at the Tony Kiser Theatre.
Little Miss Sunshine features a score by William Finn and a book by Lapine. Finn and Lapine previously collaborated on the Falsettos and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. In the new musical, Nordberg plays Olive Hoover, with Block as Sheryl Hoover, Swenson as Richard Hoover, O’Malley as Frank Hoover, Wesley Taylor as Joshua Rose, Logan Rowland as Dwayne Hoover, John Lamon as Buddy, David Rasche as Grandpa Hoover and Jennifer Sanchez as Miss California.
Based on the movie of the same name, Little Miss Sunshine tells the story of Olive (Nordberg), an idealistic young girl who convinces her entire family to drive an old VW bus 800 miles to a pre-teen beauty pageant. As the group makes its journey, a series of mishaps threaten to derail the trip.
