Stars of David, a concert presentation celebrating well-known Jewish personalities, including Tony Award-winning playwright Tony Kushner, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and comedy legend Joan Rivers, will play a limited engagement November 13 through December 15 at off-Broadway's DR2 Theatre. Conceived by Aaron Harnick and Abigail Pogrebin and directed by Gordon Greenberg, the show will feature original songs by top Broadway composers and lyricists.
Based on the bestselling book Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish by Abigail Pogrebin, other well known Jewish personalities celebrated include Bravo Executive Andy Cohen, feminist icon Gloria Steinem, designer Kenneth Cole, actress and comedian Fran Drescher, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, 60 Minutes’ Mike Wallace and TV writer-producer Norman Lear.
The stars' stories have been adapted into humorous and often touching songs by award-winning writers such as Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line), Marilyn & Alan Bergman (Yentl), Sheldon Harnick (Fiddler on the Roof), Duncan Sheik & Steven Sater (Spring Awakening), Jeanine Tesori (Caroline, Or Change), Richard Maltby & David Shire (Closer Than Ever), Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and Michael Friedman (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).
The cast features Janet Metz, Alan Schmuckler, Aaron Serotsky and Wicked favorite Donna Vivino.
