A funeral home provides the backdrop for the new musical Fun Home, which opens October 22 in the Public’s Newman Theater. Based on Alison Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic novel, the show premiered through the Public Lab last year and began performances on September 30.
Fun Home charts a girl’s quest to come to terms with her father’s unexpected death. As she moves between past and present, Alison dives deep into the story of her volatile, brilliant father and relives her unique childhood at her family’s funeral home.
Directed by Sam Gold, the production stars Tony winner Michael Cerveris as Bruce, Tony nominee Judy Kuhn as Helen, Alexandra Socha as Medium Alison, Sydney Lucas as Small Alison, Beth Malone as Alison, Joel Perez as Roy, Griffin Birney as John, Noah Hinsdale as Christian and Roberta Colindrez as Joan.
The show features music by four-time Tony nominee Jeanine Tesori, with lyrics/book by Lisa Kron, scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Ben Stanton, sound design by Kai Harada, projection design by Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg, wig design by Paul Huntley, music direction by Chris Fenwick and choreography by Danny Mefford.
