Halloween is the most theatrical holiday, so it makes perfect sense that Broadway actors—who understand the value of rocking a costume—would embrace the spooky season. We asked your favorite stage stars to share memories of yummy treats, silly tricks and the best and worst costumes they ever wore—plus a photo! Happy Halloween, everybody.
CELIA KEENAN-BOLGER (Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie)
What was your favorite Halloween costume of all time, and how old were you when you wore it?
My junior year of college, my two best friends and I went as the elements earth, wind and fire. We were pretty proud of ourselves.
What’s the most embarrassing Halloween costume you ever wore?
I dressed up like a beatnik when I was 12. No one knew who I was, so I started telling people I was one of the Sprockets on Saturday Night Live.
What is your favorite Halloween candy, and why?
Candy. Corn.
What’s the worst “treat” you were ever given on Halloween?
I was never a fan of the apple.
Have you ever dressed up as a Broadway character? If so, which one?
Oh, I definitely dressed up as Annie when I was seven years old! [See photo above.]
What is your Halloween costume this year?
Well, we have a show on the 31st, so I’ll be dressing up as Laura Wingfield.
What do you love most about Halloween?
I’m a sucker for a kid in a costume.
