Halloween is the most theatrical holiday, so it makes perfect sense that Broadway actors—who understand the value of rocking a costume—would embrace the spooky season. We asked your favorite stage stars to share memories of yummy treats, silly tricks and the best and worst costumes they ever wore—with a photo! Happy Halloween!
LESLI MARGHERITA (Mrs. Wormwood in Matilda
What was your favorite Halloween costume of all time, and how old were you when you wore it?
It’s the one in the picture above. When I was seven, I was a Rubik’s Cube. I was badass. However... keep reading...
What’s the most embarrassing Halloween costume you ever wore?
For some reason, when I was eight, I decided I wanted to be a super hero hot dog, and I called myself “Wonder Weenie.” My mom made me a hot dog costume with a cape. I have burned all of the pictures, as it would have burned your eyes.
What’s your favorite Halloween candy, and why?
Reese’s Pumpkins. It’s not really a Halloween specific candy, just the shape. I love Reese’s cups. They could make a “Reese’s Turd” and I would buy it.
What’s the worst “treat” you were ever given on Halloween?
So...to continue the Rubik’s Cube story, when my sisters took me trick-or-treating that night, I tripped on the sidewalk and went tumbling in that cardboard box. I broke my front tooth in half. I still have a fake tooth because of that crappo cube. That is the “treat” that will be with me forever. I did get way more candy because of it, though. Score.
Have you ever dressed up as a Broadway character? If so, which one?
I did a competition dance to “Jellicle Ball” (as you do), and I had a Cats costume I wore one year when I was about 10. I think it cost so much money that my mom was like, “YOU WILL WEAR THIS ALL YEAR.”
What is your favorite Halloween horror movie, and why?
I can’t. I can’t with horror movies. Anything scary. It is entertainment for my friends to drag me haunted houses so they can laugh at me. I can’t.
What do you think is the hottest Broadway‐themed costume for 2013?
Umm...Mrs. Wormwood! Uh duh. I’ll be disappointed if I don’t see some drag queens dressed up as me.
What is your Halloween costume this year?
Tired Busty Performer Who Eats Too Much Mac And Cheese
What do you love most about Halloween?
Pumpkin everything. Fall is my favorite season. I’ve never really had a good one weather-wise in L.A., so this is super fun. I’m also really looking forward to celebrating it with the kids in our show. I think they are gonna trick-or-treat in our dressing rooms. They had just better not try and take my Reese’s, or they will never forget this Halloween.
