Halloween is the most theatrical holiday, so it makes perfect sense that Broadway actors—who understand the value of rocking a costume—would embrace the spooky season. We asked your favorite stage stars to share memories of yummy treats, silly tricks and the best and worst costumes they ever wore—with a photo! Happy Halloween!
DEREK KLENA (Fiyero in Wicked)
What was your favorite Halloween costume of all time, and how old were you when you wore it?
It would probably be Inspector Gadget; I think I wore that costume in the second grade. I remember my mom spent tons of time glue-gunning little plastic toys on my trench coat, and I had tons of little trinkets and gadgets with me. It was epic.
What’s the most embarrassing Halloween costume you ever wore?
I would have to say my Hercules costume in the first grade [above] because I was basically wearing a plastic chest plate and a skirt…not the most comfortable costume to wear while playing kickball and running around the playground.
What’s your favorite Halloween candy, and why?
Reese’s or Snickers. It’s a tie.
Have you ever dressed up as a Broadway character? If so, which one?
I have actually dressed up as Broadway characters a few times. I was Aladdin, Charlie Chaplin, Danny from Grease, Peter Pan, and the Scarecrow. I guess none of these are authentic Broadway characters, but they all have been seen or will be seen on Broadway!
What is your Halloween costume this year?
I am still debating, but it quite possibly may be a fox from that YouTube music video “What does the fox say?”
