Tony winners Christian Borle and Beth Leavel along with Kinky Boots Tony nominee Annaleigh Ashford, are putting on a good old fashioned dog and pony show! But really: San Diego's Old Globe will present a developmental, industry-only reading of the new musical comedy Dog and Pony on November 1 in New York City. Other stars on board include Heidi Blickenstaff and Wicked's Derek Klena.
The musical, which will receive its world premiere at The Old Globe next spring, running May 28, 2014 through June 29, features a book by Tony nominee Rick Elice (Jersey Boys, Peter and the Starcatcher), music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker (Altar Boyz) and direction by Tony winner Roger Rees (Peter and the Starcatcher, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby). Casting for the musical's 2014 production at The Old Globe will be announced at a later date.
In Dog and Pony, Mags and Andy are a screenwriting team with a track record of hits and a professional relationship that’s firing on all cylinders, but when Andy’s marriage hits the rocks, forever single Mags finds she wants something more. Will romance ruin their perfect relationship? Dog and Pony takes a witty and irreverent look at what women want and whether men fit the bill...or don’t.
Borle won a Tony for his performance as Black Stache in Peter and the Starcatcher, and most recently starred in NBC's Broadway dramedy Smash. Leavel won a Tony for The Drowsy Chaperone and earned a nomination for her performance in Baby It's You. Ashford earned a Tony nomination and was a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award winner for her role as Lauren in the Tony-winning Kinky Boots.
