Miss Hedwig is bringing her glittering rock act to Broadway, and she's officially assembled her gritty backup band, The Angry Inch. In the new revival of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Emmy winner Neil Patrick Harris will rock out with guitar and keyboard player Justin Craig as musical director Skszp, bass player Matt Duncan, guitar player Tim Mislock and drummer Peter Yanowitz. Directed by Michael Mayer, the 1998 cult favorite musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask will begin performances March 29, 2014 at the Belasco Theatre, with an official opening night set for April 22. Casting for Hedwig’s husband and backup singer Yitzak will be announced shortly.
The creative team features a few familiar faces who either worked on the original Hedwig off-Broadway or the 2001 film. They include Arianne Phillips, who will design the costumes, Mike Potter, who takes on hair/makeup design and Timothy O'Heir, who will serve as sound designer. Additionally, Hedwig will feature set design by Julian Crouch, lighting design by Kevin Adams and music supervision by Ethan Popp.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of a fictional rock ‘n’ roll band, fronted by Hedwig (Harris), a transgender “internationally ignored song stylist” from communist East Berlin. In the musical, Hedwig brings her rock show to New York City to set the record straight about her life, her loves and the botched operation that left her with an “angry inch.”
