August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned Starts Performances Off-Broadway

Tony winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson stars as the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson in the New York premier of How I Learned What I Learned, which begins performances on November 5. The production will play through December 22 at the Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre in off-Broadway's Pershing Square Signature Center, with an official opening night set for November 24.

In the new solo show directed and co-conceived by Todd Kreidler, Santiago-Hudson shares stories of Wilson’s life, including his first few jobs, a stint in jail, an early relationship, his first kiss, his foray into film and the friends he made over his lifetime. The play charts one man's journey of self-discovery through adversity, and what it means to be a black artist in America. Wilson is the writer of The Piano Lesson, Fences, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Two Trains Running and many more.

The new production features scenic and projection design by David Gallo, costume design by Constanza Romero (who is Wilson's widow), lighting design by Thom Weaver and sound design by Dan Moses Schreier.
