Corbin Bleu, who jumped from the High School Musical film franchise to the Broadway stage in In the Heights, has established himself as a frontrunner in the fall season of Dancing With the Stars. In spite of his superior talent, Bleu and his partner, fellow Broadway vet Karina Smirnoff (Forever Tango, Burn the Floor), have had their ups and downs the judges due to the couple’s often daring routines. All that changed on November 11, when Bleu, Smirnoff and pro Witney Carson joined forces for a blistering Fosse-style jazz dance set to Usher’s “Yeah.” Taking the stage in white gloves and top hats, with a perfect Fosse swagger, the trio remained in sync throughout a very complicated number. Broadway purists might cringe at the juxtaposition of this style of choreography with a hip-hop cover song, but the judges were enthralled, awarding Bleu a perfect 30. Carrie Ann Inaba went further, declaring the routine the best she had seen in 17 seasons of DWTS, and saying, “I think you did what Bob Fosse would have done today.” Watch the clip below and see if you agree!
