The new musical Fun Home takes audiences inside the Bechdel Funeral Home, where precocious Alison is growing up with her closeted father, unhappy mother and two siblings. Tony winner Michael Cerveris leads the cast as Bruce Bechdel, with Beth Malone as the oldest of three actresses playing Alison. Broadway.com resident artist Justin ‘Squigs’ Robertson headed downtown to see the show, which is based on Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir and features an highly praised score by Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by Lisa Kron. Savor his portrait above, with Malone and Cerveris in the foreground and (from left) Judy Kuhn as matriarch Helen, Noah Hinsdale as Christian Bechdel, Griffin Birney as John Bechdel, Sydney Lucas as Small Alison, Emily Skeggs as Medium Alison and Roberta Colindrez as Joan. See them at the Public through January 12!
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home.
